As a relatively recent immigrant from the Midwest to Roxborough Park, Colorado, I have a concept of Western landscape photography that is shaped by the climate and physical differences between these two regions. Dry air, high altitude, vast space and monumental land features produce brilliant sun, crystalline air, dramatic tonal contrasts, seemingly infinite shadows and vistas and clouds with exquisitely defined detail and texture. These are the elements of the glorious landscapes of the West that I want to celebrate in my photos. Fog, mist, haze and fuzzy clouds may beautifully define the woodlands and skies of Ohio, the mountains of the East and the coasts of New England, but not the bold mountain and desert landscapes of the West.
